Baby Clothing Size Guide: How to Find the Right Fit

Shopping for baby clothes should be fun, but sizing can sometimes feel confusing. What is the difference between newborn and 0–3 months? Does a six-month outfit fit at six months? And what should you choose when buying a baby shower gift?

The most important thing to remember is that the age printed on the tag is only a guide. Babies grow at different rates, and sizing can vary between clothing brands. When possible, use the baby’s height and weight instead of age alone.

This is a general baby clothing size chart, so always check the individual brand’s recommendations when available.

What If the Baby Is Between Sizes?

When a baby is between sizes, we usually suggest sizing up. A slightly roomy outfit allows space for growth and is often more comfortable—especially for sleepers, bubbles and one-piece outfits.

However, sizing up too much may not work well for sleepwear because some pajamas are designed to fit snugly for safety. Always follow the fit and safety information provided on the garment.

What Size Should You Buy for a Baby Shower?

If you are unsure of the baby’s expected size, 3–6 months or 6–9 months can be great choices. New parents often receive plenty of newborn clothing, and babies sometimes outgrow those tiny sizes very quickly.

Also consider the season. A baby born in summer may need a larger size in holiday clothing, while a winter newborn may wear 6–9 month outfits once warmer weather arrives.
